The Balanced Man Program

balanced_man

The "Balanced Man" member development program of the Maine Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon is designed as a series of challenge classes which both educate brothers in the history and workings of the fraternity as well as focusing on key areas of personal growth. The aim of the program is not just to introduce members into the fraternity, but also to ensure that every brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon is made better by their time spent there. The motto of "leader, scholar, athlete, gentleman" isn't just a saying; it’s the intended result of time spent learning and growing with other brothers, helping to foster a sense of community and brotherly love. Weekly meetings begin with such topics as the administration of the fraternity and progress onward to service projects and experience-based learning events. Every brother of Sigma Phi Epsilon should have the opportunity to graduate feeling like he has benefitted personally from the experience, and has gained new life skills and developed a more comprehensive network. Most of all, he should leave feeling like he has made lifelong friendships which he will carry with him after graduation.

The Residential Learning Community

Here at the Maine Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon we take our charge of building balanced men very seriously. One element of the balanced man to be focused on during his years spent at the University of Maine is his academic performance. Thus we have adopted the philosophy of Sigma Phi Epsilon's Residential Learning Community, or RLC. The RLC is a living environment within our chapter house that is constructed to ensure that each brother has access to a variety of resources that exist for the sole purpose of helping them achieve their own individual academic goals to the highest order. Some of the resources include a resident scholar (a graduate student, currently enrolled at the University of Maine, who is dedicated to promoting the academic success of the individuals of our chapter), a private Sigma Phi Epsilon library, multiple on-line computers that are exclusively available to our brothers, a faculty fellow (a tenured professor at the University dedicated to promoting the academic excellence of our fraternity), and a large alumni fellowship that remain dedicated to keeping the doors of opportunity open and available to those of us here at Maine Alpha.

Sound Mind, Sound Body
Starting with our implication of The Balanced Man Program in 2000, The Maine Alpha Chapter has been committed to excellence in all areas, especially academics.  Our view is that the Sound Mind is an intregal part of the college experience.  Sigma Phi Epsilon has led the entire Greek system in highest GPA consistenly over the past few years taking us to last semester with a cumulative GPA of 60 plus members at a 3.43, over a half of a point above the rest.  Sigma Phi Epsilon's dedication to the Balanced Man has put us on this path of excellence and we will continue to strive always to improve upon this.
